Introducing the vCAD 2.0 Mobile App

The vCAD mobile app has been going through some changes recently.  Now, it’s officially ready to be called “Coming Soon…”.  Look for it on the iPhone App Store and Google Play Store in July 2017.  We’ve taken a lot of feedback and worked with a UX team to bring out the best in our app.  There are some great new features to tell you about.

First, I’d like to introduce you to Interactive Visualization.   Uploading a 3D model to our server was originally intended to be viewed in VR.  While a good tool for viewing your model in Virtual Reality, we (and maybe the VR industry in general) realized that there’s an understated burden with VR, you have to have a viewer and sit in a chair that swivels.  VR is great when you need it, but often you want something simpler and more convenient.

We’ve listened to that feedback. vCAD’s VR mode and One-Touch Navigation® will remain the same. One click (and hold) to fully navigate any 3d model in VR.  The change comes with our non-VR mode.  Currently this is in “Window Mode” and likely is best suited for augmented reality not CAD visualization.  From now on the non-VR mode has swipe and double-tap controls.  Meaning you swipe your phone to look around and double tap (then hold) to move forward.

We’ve found that this navigation method works best for sitting down in a chair and quickly walking through your model.  Additionally, vCAD Pro users using ScreenShare (formally Spectator Mode) will turn their phone into a powerful presentation remote control.  Broadcast your mobile view to any PC/MAC computer internet browser.

The Full view (non-VR mode) onscreen menu has a few straightforward buttons.  From the top down:

  • Exit model
  • Enter VR mode
  • Walk backward
  • Walk forward
  • Settings
  • Open/Close the button overlay

As mentioned before the vCAD mobile VR mode One-Touch Navigation® remains the same.  However there are some updates for Android phones to keep in-line with Google’s latest VR mode guidelines.  Here are the VR mode options:

  • iOS VR settings:
    • Once in VR mode, click the phone icon to exit VR mode and go back to the non-VR, Full View mode.
    • Click the Upper Left Back Arrow to return to the Gallery.
    • Click the onscreen Gear to assign your phyiscal VR headset to the vCAD app. (Requires Google Cardboard App, you’ll be prompted to download it when you need it.)
  • Android VR settings:
    • Once in VR mode, use the phone’s BACK button to exit VR mode and go back to the non-VR, Full View mode.
    • Click the Upper Left “X” to exit the vCAD app and return to your phone’s Homescreen.
    • Click the onscreen Gear to assign your phyiscal VR headset to the vCAD app. (Requries Google Play VR Services, you’ll be prompted to download it when you need it.)
